In the heart of Terminal 1 at Milan Malpensa Airport, Rizoma Architetture has designed the new space for Panella, the historic Roman bakery founded ninety years ago, transforming it into a refined coffee & bakery that blends Italian gastronomic tradition with warm, contemporary design.
The concept reinterprets the atmosphere of the original location on Via Merulana in Rome, offering a welcoming and inclusive environment designed for all types of travelers: from business passengers seeking a revitalizing break, to those looking to enjoy a good coffee before their flight, to those in search of a gourmet souvenir to take home.
The interior design combines classic materials with modern solutions: decorative ceramics, wood and metal furnishings, burnished mirrors, atmospheric lighting, and artisanal details. The large counter with display case, facing the airport gallery, offers a constantly visible selection of sweet and savory items, while the grab & go area allows for a quick yet quality break.
The outdoor area, the true heart of the project, evokes a Roman terrace: metal arches inspired by classical architecture, planters, and comfortable seating create a relaxed setting—ideal for socializing, reading, working, or simply enjoying a coffee under a warm, soft light.
Panella Malpensa is much more than a bakery: it’s a miniature Italian piazza, suspended between past and future, between elegance and accessibility. A timeless place where good bread, design, and hospitality come together—even at the airport.
